Karoo crafts

The Karoo Crafts project addresses the challenge of promoting the branding, marketing and distribution of Karoo products.  This will promote and multiply the linkages between the "first economy" of tourists, tourism operators, product buyers and guest houses, on the one hand, and the "second economy" of vulnerable and emergent craftspeople.

The project includes 66 Karoo towns.

We hope to create a not-for-profit Karoo Crafts Co-operative, to market Karoo crafts by means of: (1) a Karoo crafts catalogue, (2) a Karoo crafts website, and (3) Karoo crafts stalls, particularly on the main Karoo highways.

At the same time, a survey of Karoo crafters will be conducted.  This will help us to understand the craft sector and thereby refine the development initiatives to be undertaken.  The survey will also be the basis of a research paper and an academic article.
